What is Ceremonial Cacao?

Ceremonial cacao is a plant medicine

Unlike the cacao used in everyday chocolate from the supermarket, ceremonial cacao is consciously farmed and prepared with intention and reverence, throughout every single process enhancing it’s energetic properties. Making it a gentle yet potent medicine for deep inner exploration and our spiritual and emotional growth.

This sacred plant has deep significance in mesoamerica and south american cultures, having been used as an ally in cultural and sacred rituals, ceremonies and celebrations for centuries.

Cacao made ceremonially in these indigenous communities is grown traditionally and harvested sustainably with deep respect for the cacao tree and surrounding ecosystem. Preparing it in a way that is intended for medicine.

The overuse of heat and metal machinery in the chocolate industry, causes the delicate and sacred essence of cacao to be lost. With the addition of milks and sugars, it has become a product that instead of bringing health, causes illness.

Luckily, there are still indigenous communities who continue to prepare cacao, the way they have for centuries, as medicine. Fermenting, roasting and grounding the beans using traditional techniques, where possible, to ensure the potency and sacredness of the cacao remains intact. The final product is then cleansed and blessed by spiritual leaders within the community, before being sent around the world for our consumption, as ceremonial cacao.

Unfortunately not all cacao labelled as “ceremonial” is made equally. As consumers we need to be mindful of supporting indigenous farmers and producers who are transparent about their practices and their connection to the medicine and the land.

The cacao I use personally and share with my community are both grown and produced in Guatemala by two different indigenous mayan communities:

Ruk’u’x Ulew and Fifth Element.
